The article deals with trends in the development of journalism education, determined by the concept of Sustainable development, which is can be thought of in terms of three spheres: economic, environmental and social. In particular, the paper focuses on the social dimension in the system of development options aimed at meeting the needs of modern society without endangering future generations, which should seek to reach a consensus on equitable distribution of resources through the prism of global environmental issues. The relevance of the study is due to the objective need of society for free and pluralistic media because human as a subject of development must participate in the processes that shape the sphere of his life, approve decisions, monitor their implementation. Achieving human development goals requires objective information that can only be made available to citizens through independent and pluralistic media. This require to review the system of training journalists in current issues, and adjusting educational programs and curricula with current challenges. The aim of the article is to analyze the new syllabi developed by UNESCO on teaching journalism for sustainable development. The overviewed programs of the courses “Journalism and sustainable development”, “Journalism and sustainable development”, “Ecological journalism”, “Reporting sustainable tourism”, “Reporting migration, with a focus on refugees”, “Ethical investigative journalism”, “Digital media, social networks and the changing face of journalism” are aimed at acquainting future journalists with the fundamentals of socio-scientific research, promote the formation of skills to present facts and create meaningful narratives based on interdisciplinary approach to public discourse on sustainable development
